A Milk Bath Boudoir Photo Shoot

If you’re following us on social media, you may have heard that we recently put our body love to the test in the form of a body positive milk bath boudoir photo shoot! The whole day was an experience we’ll never forget! From nerves leading up to the initial splash into the tub to excitement as we waited for our proofs to be ready, we were on quite the roller coaster. But let’s back up a bit…

A couple months ago, Denver Milk Bath Boudoir Photographer (yes, that’s a thing!) Melissa Mullins reached out asking if we sweet peaches would be interested in doing a milk bath photo shoot with her. The goal was to be one half body love and one half festive for the winter and holiday season. Honestly, there was no hesitating, we dove right in (not to the tub – that would be painful – we figuratively dove in).

We’ve hope you enjoyed the vide above and we already shared our personal experiences on Melissa’s blog. You can read more from Amanda here and Jen through this link. Below are answers to your questions! We had Melissa sit down with us for a little Q&A about milk bath boudoir photography so that we could give you all the inside info. You can thank us later. Or now – now is good too.

1. Why a milk bath?

Milk bath sessions are a totally different experience from normal portraits or even traditional boudoir photography. It’s like combining a relaxing spa day and art project into one. The limited space and working within the confines of the water actually pushes me to be more creative in my work. I am constantly trying to think up new themes or testing out items that will float in the bath. I love to combine colors, props, and outfits to truly reflect the personality and interests of each of my clients.

2. How do you believe the milk bath photo shoot experience impacts women?

I believe as women, even just taking some time to do something for ourselves is very empowering. In our everyday lives we tend to put others’ needs in front of our own, so to take a day to have an experience like this where you can relax, get pampered, and celebrate yourself can be so rewarding.

3. What would be your advice to someone considering a milk bath boudoir shoot who is nervous about it?

I promise it’s really fun! I have a full FAQ page on my website as well as a behind the scenes video so you can take a peek at what it’s like before you come in for your session. My advice is to plan ahead by picking out your favorite outfits and thinking about what colors you like, but on the day of the session to relax and go with the flow. My team and I really just want to make sure you have a fun day, and if you are nervous about anything just talk to me ahead of time!

4. What’s your favorite part of the milk bath experience?

Showing the final images to my clients is my favorite part of the milk bath sessions. It’s so cool as an artist to see your work impact people, and I think there is no better way than showing a women the side of herself she may not always be able to see or even know is there. It’s the best part of my job!

5. Is it really milk?

It is mostly water. I add epsom salts, essential oils, and milk. The water is warm, and I do the sessions inside my studio.  It’s a pretty crazy production and looks ridiculous from behind the scenes, but the final images are worth it! It’s totally private except for me, my makeup artist, and sometimes an assistant to wrangle the props, help you with your wardrobe, and help me make sure everything looks perfect! It’s an all-female team, and we are here to make sure you are comfortable and look amazing.
